Renovating your kitchen can be a challenge because the elements you put into place will need to last for many years to come. With all the different colors and styles of cabinetry and all the different types of granite, the possibilities can seem limitless. Fortunately, we can break it into three steps for you, to make it easier to choose.
- Do you want to complement or contrast your
colors? This is the first, most important decision you’ll have to make when
planning your kitchen’s color scheme.
- If you choose a complementary look, you’ll pick granite and cabinets that are similar in color. This could be a gold granite and a light maple cabinet, or black granite with oak cabinets, but whatever your complementary colors may be, they create a welcoming, soothing, look.
- A contrasting color scheme gives a more dramatic feel to the room. Maybe you’ll choose black cabinets with white granite or white cabinets with black granite. Contrasting the colors makes for a bold look.
- Your first decision informs your second. Once you’ve decided whether to complement or contrast, it’s time to choose your colors. You can match your colors based on the primary color in the granite or the marbling or veining. You might, for instance, choose a black granite, then pick the cabinetry based on gray or white flecks within the granite. If you’ve already got your cabinetry, take a drawer with you to the store, so you can make sure you’re choosing the right granite. Granite is much more expensive to replace than cabinets, so it’s important to make sure you’ve selected the right stone before you begin.
- The final decision is all about the accents. The next step after selecting granite and countertops is going to be choosing your fixtures. This should be a fairly simple decision, as most people go with silver or metallics. However, depending on your color scheme, dark brown fixtures might look really nice with your complementary design, and black might really set off your contrasting design. Look critically at the colors you’ve chosen, not just for the cabinets and countertops, but also for the floors, walls, and trim, before making your final decision.
