Granite is a popular choice for kitchen countertops, and it’s no wonder. Architects and homeowners alike appreciate this natural stone’s beauty, strength, durability, and versatility. If you’ve recently had granite countertops installed, though, it’s important to know how to clean them.
We’ll start with what you shouldn’t do.
- Don’t use harsh cleaning products. Granite won’t be etched by cleaners like marble will, but it’s important to avoid cleaning with things like bleach, glass cleaner, and degreasers. Cleaners with ammonia or citrus are not suitable for granite, and even vinegar can be damaging. While these cleaners won’t damage the granite itself, they will degrade the granite sealer and make it vulnerable to staining. Bathroom, tub and tile, and grout cleaners should never be used on granite.
- Don’t get on top of your countertops. Granite countertops are hard but not flexible, so if too much weight is applied to one spot, they can crack. Never sit or stand on them.
- Don’t store products directly on your counter. If a liquid stays on a granite surface for a long time, it can cause a stain. Keep your granite countertops protected by storing cooking oils, hair products, toiletries, and other liquids on shelves or decorative trays.
Let’s move on to the things you should do to keep your granite in peak condition.
- Do blot up spills as soon as they happen. Leaving acidic substances or cooking oil on the granite won’t etch it, but it could potentially stain it, so clean the counter quickly using hot water and a cloth. Even dish soap can dull the finish on granite, so if you must use a cleaner, use one specifically formulated for granite counters.
- Do use coasters and trivets. Just as you don’t want to store liquids directly on granite, it’s good practice not to place them directly on it. And even though granite is heat-resistant, grit that becomes trapped between a hot pot and the counter can lead to small pits and dings.
- Do use a cutting board. While granite doesn’t scratch when you cut directly on it, making this your practice will dull your knives. In fact, tiny pieces of your knives blades will end up in your granite over time, and this can mar the look of your countertop.
